Here is a basic theological formula: a deity is a personification of a spiritual power. And deities who are not recognized become demonic; they become dangerous. When you have not been in communication with them, whether messages have gone unheard or unheeded, and when they do, inevitably, breakthrough, your conscious life is overthrown. There is, literally, hell to pay.
